Children Camp – 14 & Under

Summer camp will have two sections.
1) Intense Training in Chess
2) Regular summer camp where there is chess mixed with other activities.

NM Geoffrey Byfield (President and founder)

The founder and president of the Liguanea Chess Club holds the esteemed title of National Chess Master and boasts seven victories in the Jamaica Open Chess Championships. His academic achievements include first degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of the West Indies (UWI) and Law from the University of Technology (Utech). Additionally, he holds a postgraduate diploma in management from UWI. Recognized for his academic excellence, Byfield was honored as the Student of the Year at CAST (now Utech) in 1981. Over the past 26 years, he has dedicated his expertise to teaching chess.
Odane Hall (Head Coach)

Regarded by many as being among the best Chess coaches in Jamaica. He is loved by children in all the schools in which we operate. Parents say he “becomes a child” and in so doing makes a connection with the children that he teaches. The present under-10 male champion and under-8 female champions of Jamaica are coached by Mr. Hall. He has been teaching chess for the past 11 years.
Carol Crosbie Reid (Chess Teacher/ Staff Supervisor)

Our expert in working with young children. Particularly at Emmanuel Christian Academy where we have done chess on the curriculum for the past seventeen years, Mrs. Reid has been highly effective in working with children as young as kindergarten. Mrs. Reid is also the administrator of the club. She has been working with the Liguanea Chess Club for the past 14 years.
Tassia Lewis (Chess Teacher/Administrator)

Ms.Lewis has an associate degree in hospitality, Entertainment, and Tourism and an NCTVET certificate in food preparation. She has been working with the Liguanea Chess Club for 3 years.

Typical Day
9:00 – 9:15 Devotions
9:15 - 10:45 Main Chess Session
10:45 - 12:00 Sport/Activity Options
12:10 –1:00 Lunch

2:00 -3:00 Sport/Activity Options
Sport/Activity options: Football, cricket, Swimming, Table tennis, Darts, Chess, Origami, Robotics.
Special Activities: On Thursdays we will go on a trip to a place of scientific, historical, or cultural interest. Example The Nuclear Centre, Chemistry department UWI, Dairy Industry.
The first Chess session is mandatory. After that in each session campers can choose activities from several options. Campers can either focus on a given number of activities or choose instead to be exposed to most or all of them.

Chess (A)
An introduction to the exciting world of chess! Students will learn basic opening, middle game, and endgame strategies and how to achieve a proper coordination of pieces. Chess notation will be taught in order to review games. Instruction will establish an appropriate balance between lecture, discussion and structured play. Chess sets and boards are provided for daily practice. Remember, chess makes you smart!

Chess (B)
These sessions are suitable for children who have already acquired a working knowledge. The course will focus on methods of attack and defense, on long term strategic planning as well as chess tactics and combinations. Chess set and board are provided for daily practice. Classroom lectures emphasize the elements of logical thinking through a series of chess puzzles.

Science
Ever wondered how certain things around us happen? What about reactions of the explosive nature? What’s this thing about sodium and nitrogen and funny words like that? Well kids will explore the wonderful world of science in two forms. They will do ‘in-house’ experiments and TRIPS to various scientific institutions. Every week there will be at least one such activity.

Exciting video game tournaments with Nintendo Switch and other game systems! You can even bring your own games…

There is a 5% discount for families of 2 or more and a 5% discount for payment a month in advance. Ask for a group discount if you have a group of three or more children. Only one discount will be given to an individual or group.

Lunch
Food will be on sale at summer camp. This will include juices, patties, coco-bread, bun and cheese and pizza. Parents can also prepare luch for children to carry.

Please indicate on the registration form, any medical concerns of which you believe we ought to be aware. Please leave an emergency contact for the parent(s).
